Changing the rules by which timber is harvested in California requires political will and support from the state legislature, the executive branch and the people of California. Change is needed to bring California's timber harvest practices in line with the latest advances is science, economics, and land use planning approaches. The emergence in the early 1990's of the Forest Stewardship Council and the promulgation of guidelines and certification protocols for production of timber in a ecologically balanced and sustainable manner brings into question the effectiveness of California's regulatory regime, which is much less protective of our public trust resource, our spectacular forests.

EPFW is continually engaged in conversations with forest protection stakeholders, members of the legislatures, subject matter experts, and the public, in search of rational legislative solutions that would align the state and local laws and regulations with the principles of sustainable timber harvesting. We review upcoming bills and provide input into the legislative process.

We are currently drafting proposed revisions to the Forest Practice Act and Forest Practice Rules that we believe would maintain the health of California's forests and their timber valuate for many generations.
